Today.....amazingly mild as temperatures will be in the 40's, 50's, and 60's across the region. I just have one thing to say about that; GO OUTSIDE! You should enjoy the nice weather today and tomorrow because it will look and feel more like March around here just in time for the weekend. A storm system will work it's way across the upper Midwest starting late Friday night. The exact track of this storm is still unknown but our best estimates show that the southeast will likely see the most precipitation of both rain and snow. The storm will likely start out as rain with temperatures, at and above the surface, well above the freeze mark. This is shown below.
(Notice the area circled in the southeast is above freezing and that spells rain. This is a forecast for Saturday at noon.)
But it wont take long for the atmosphere to cool and snow to start falling.
(By late Saturday night, the same circled area is now below freezing and in the prime position to receive snow.)
Right now it's only looking like we will see light accumulations across the area with a general 1-3" swath. This time though, it looks like southeast SD has the best chance of seeing the most snow; right now about 3" or so. Here is what the National Weather Service is predicting.
Just keep in mind that components are always changing so the forecast will likely change at least a little bit before Saturday. So just keep checking back for the latest.
