Winter Returns

As Jesse mentioned, snow is on the way along with some colder temperatures. So it looks like winter isn't quite over just yet. But if you are freaking out about the possibility of snow, I have good news, it doesn't look like it's going to be all that much. In fact, probably more of a nuisance then anything else. The models have had a really tough time deciding just exactly what this next storm is going to do but it looks like they finally have reached a solution. Here is what one of the models is saying for snowfall totals. You can see that many areas will only get an inch or two and that would be about it. With a lot of moisture present, there might be a couple areas that will squeeze out three inches or so but I really think that's pushing it.

A couple of days ago, this storm showed real potential to be a huge snow maker for the Eastern part of the state. And it still would be however, this double streamed system isn't lining up very well. This storm is double pronged, meaning it's getting its energy from the southern jet stream and the northern jet stream. So the surface low is tracking along the southern jet stream but is too far in front of the upper level low pressure on the northern jet stream to help it strengthen. Therefore, the storm does not produce as much precipitation because it does not have upper level support. This is shown in the picture below.
The areas I have circled are the individual areas of vorticity (AKA Low pressures). Notice they do not line up one on top of the other. That is the reason for the lack of precipitation from this one.

So count your blessings if you don't like the snow because we are going to dodge a bullet. For those of you who like the snow, then enjoy the little bit that we get.
