Let it Snow, I mean Blizzard

As I write this blog today I stare at our watches and warnings map and realize that about 90% of the state is under a blizzard warning. wow! We can see some locally heavy snow but the reason for the blizzard warning is the winds. We have had reports from Western South Dakota this moring of Gusts to nearly 80 mph. And unfortunately, these winds are headed in our direction. Some of the reports out of Western South Dakota really are amazing; 38.5" of snow around Deadwood, visibilities down to just a few feet in places, and snow drifts up to 6 feet high. We aren't expecting that much snow but the winds will be whipping it around so it will seem like a lot. Looks like most areas will see anywhere from 1-6" of snow with local areas to the north topping 8".
I would say that most locations will be on the low end of the scale in terms of overall snowfall but we could still see some good snow drifts with the anticipated 30-50mph winds. This is going to be short today because lots going on. Remember that 1-90 is closed from Murdo to the Wyoming state line so I would just not even bother trying to travel anywhere in the state today or tonight. Stay Safe!!
