We've been watching rain throughout the day... with about 0.27" of rainfall at our station here on the south side of Sioux Falls. The official total for Sioux Falls, at least as of this writing, is up to 0.23" of rainfall. Madison has picked up 0.61", and the Yankton area is the big winner on the day, at least out of all official airport reporting stations, with 0.85" of rainfall.
The rain wasn't the only story of the day. The cool weather was another big one. Huron set a new record low maximum temperature on the day, breaking an old one set back in 1883 - so a 126 year record low high of 67 was broken by 4 degrees today (Huron made it up to 63).
If you're wondering why we're so cold right now, look closely at that image above. That is a map showing the winds at the jetstream level. See how right over South Dakota there is the bottom of a u-shape? That is a dip in the jetstream that is allowing some very cool Canadian air to sink in. The jet stream starts to shift toward next week - but really doesn't look to get into a truly summer-like pattern in the short term.
We'll talk more about these temperatures - and hopefully a big warm-up - in the future.
Have a good night!
