Strong Line of Stoms Moving East

This line has really intensifed over the last 3 hours... Wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour have been reported along with pea to quarter size hail - if you can postpone your travel plans - it's best to do that. Bring the car in the garage if you have one - some of the hailstones are one inch and above. Behind this front and line of storms we'll see very strong winds and wind gusts and eventually much cooler weather.
Keep safe,
KDLT Meteorologist Jesse Ritka

Cold July!!

I wanted to touch on the July weather one more time just because of how extremely unusual it is. The National Weather Service out of Aberdeen has put together a few facts and figures from the last few weeks and here are some of them. These figures are for July through the 29th. So not official numbers quite yet.The good news out of all of this is that it does look like August will start off warmer then most of the month of July starting on Sunday.

Big Warm-up Possible... And Severe Weather Chances Tomorrow?

We'll talk first about severe weather chances for Friday. They aren't necessarily great - but it's been so long since we've seen severe weather that it's worth a mention. Here's where we're seeing the best chance for any isolated severe storms:

That comes after we return to the 80s for a day on Friday. We cool off again on Saturday - but then... then... we warm up significantly. Look at these temperatures we're seeing as a possibility for Sunday and then Tuesday:

First, 80s to 90s in the viewing area for Sunday. Could be a good day for a pool outing or something of that sort. Then things get warm again for Tuesday:

Looks similar on that map - but what we're seeing is the chance of some slightly warmer temperatures than even these on the map. We'll see - it could change a bit over the next couple of days, so don't bet the farm on our first 90 degree day in a while... but it could happen.

Have a great night!

Rain & Cool Temperatures... One Record Low High So Far

We've been watching rain throughout the day... with about 0.27" of rainfall at our station here on the south side of Sioux Falls. The official total for Sioux Falls, at least as of this writing, is up to 0.23" of rainfall. Madison has picked up 0.61", and the Yankton area is the big winner on the day, at least out of all official airport reporting stations, with 0.85" of rainfall.

The rain wasn't the only story of the day. The cool weather was another big one. Huron set a new record low maximum temperature on the day, breaking an old one set back in 1883 - so a 126 year record low high of 67 was broken by 4 degrees today (Huron made it up to 63).

If you're wondering why we're so cold right now, look closely at that image above. That is a map showing the winds at the jetstream level. See how right over South Dakota there is the bottom of a u-shape? That is a dip in the jetstream that is allowing some very cool Canadian air to sink in. The jet stream starts to shift toward next week - but really doesn't look to get into a truly summer-like pattern in the short term.

We'll talk more about these temperatures - and hopefully a big warm-up - in the future.

Have a good night!

Showers Increasing

Showers are already making there way through central South Dakota and will slowly work to the east today. Here is a current radar image.
However, we are seeing a little sunshine in areas of the east as clouds have not rolled in quite yet. That will help many areas along and east of I-29 get into the 70's today. Here is the edge of the clouds approaching I-29 at the present time.~KDLT Meteorologist Cody Matz

Woman Survives Lightning Strike In Car... And Wind Today - Storms Tomorrow?

It's a busy period of weather... but we're going to try to get to all of it. First off - if you have a spare minute or so, you should watch this news story from NBC in Florida. A woman was driving and her car was struck by lightning - it did some impressive damage to the car, and luckily they were unharmed:

Less riveting than that story is that of the wind today - with sustained winds reported of 17mph at the airport in Sioux Falls. I had first-hand knowledge of these winds today as I tried to ride a road bike into a headwind near the airport. Without the wind I was going 18-22mph - and with it I was held back to about 13-14mph while peddling as much as possible.

So there's that wind in action - but the big deal for the next couple of days will be the cool weather and the rain. Right now we're looking for rain to hold off Wednesday to the East until around dinner time. A few showers could sprout up before hand - but if you're reading this west of Sioux Falls, you can expect showers likely near lunch time.

We'll have a timeline of the rain tonight at 6 & 10pm... so make sure you watch KDLT tonight, and definitely tomorrow too, for updates.

~KDLT Chief Meteorologist Aaron Shaffer

Nice Today, Chilly Tomorrow

Looks like it will be a pleasant day today with highs ranging from the mid 70's to the low 80's with lots of sunshine. But we are still focused on tomorrow because of the cool wet weather we are expecting. Below is what the models are thinking for high temperatures on your Wednesday. Here are the average high temperatures for this time of the year.Highs on your Wednesday look like they will be 15-25 degrees cooler then average. And in some cases, we could be setting record low high temperatures for the date that go all the way back to the 1880's. So enjoy today because sunshine will be tough to find Wednesday and Thursday.

Cool Weather On The Way...

Cody talked about this a bit in the post below - but I'm going to talk a little bit more about the cooler weather on the way for the middle of the week. Specifically - Wednesday.

Look at this map of the average highs for Wednesday:

Notice the line over the Sioux Falls area. That line indicates where average highs of about 85 should be for Wednesday. The next image is of what we're looking for in the area - at least from the computer models:

How about some upper 60s to lower and middle 70s for high temperatures. This at the end of July - our typically hotter month. Obviously nothing is typically about those temperatures. A large and unusually strong storm system is to blame. How much rain we'll get remains to be seen - but everyone should expect some showers and/or thunderstorms Wednesday to Wednesday night.

We'll talk more about all of this - but for now have a good night!

~KDLT Chief Meteorologist Aaron Shaffer

Scattered Showers Today But All Eyes are on Wednesday

Experiencing a few scattered showers this morning across the area. Here is a live look at the radar.A few very light showers not producing a lot of rainfall. But the next system could be a pretty potent one. Looking at the models this morning, there is an unprecedented agreement amongst all of the models about Wednesdays storm. This gives most of our area anywhere between .50" and 1.50" of rain. Here is the forecast for rainfall on Wednesday afternoon.
Notice both models have similar amounts and are very similar in timing. Not only this but if the rain were to keep it's present course, speed, and intensity, there is the possibility that Wednesday could be one of the coldest July days on record. Look at what one model is forecasting for temperatures in the late afternoon.Notice that many areas are struggling just to get to 60 and some places may actually be shy of that mark. I don't have to tell you that that's a bit unusually for the month of July. Enjoy the 80's while you can!!

NYC Update & Why We're So Cool This Summer!

Well the tornado warning was expired before NYC could be included in it, though wind and hail reports were quite common around the area from the severe storms that rolled through. Flash flood warnings were also issued as storms continued to develop on top of the same area.

As far as for our neck of the woods... we're just stuck in this same pattern for the most part. This is a link to a loop of the 500 millibar heights - basically it shows the troughs and ridges (below)that pass over the Northern Hemisphere. If you keep an eye on the US (in that loop link) . . . we're basically stuck in between a ridge to the West and a trough to the East. This is why the Ohio River Valley and folks just to the east of us have been seeing even cooler days than us and why people in the south have been seeing continuous heat and lack of rain showers. Usually that track of 500mb heights is like a line that little pulses of energy follow which will give us rainshowers and any other type of weather.

At least we'll all get to save some money on our AC bills this week!
~KDLT Meteorologist Jesse Ritka

Tornado Warning Heading Towards NYC

Yesterday 2 tornadoes were reported in northern NY state, but currently there are several severe storms in NY and NJ. One of those cells has a tornado warning on it, though there isn't a lot of strong rotation in this cell but it is heading towards New York City - projected to be in that area in about an hour, hour and a half. Here's a look at the radar:
We'll keep watching to see how this plays out.

Cool Trend - Breif Warm-Up Tomorrow

So I've been crunching some numbers... so far this month the average high temperature in Sioux Falls is 79.6 degrees. The average high for this month so far is supposed to be 85.5 degrees, so we're practically 6 degrees cooler for the whole month.
For Huron, so far this month, the average high is 80.8 degrees whereas the high is supposed to be 85.8, 5 degrees colder than we're supposed to be.
For Mitchell, the average high is 80.5 with the normal high temperature average being 86.2, 5.7 degrees cooler.

For Aberdeen, the current average high is 79.6, compared to the normal high temperature of 84.7 degrees. 5.1 degrees colder.

Mobridge was cooler from the normal high temperature average so far this month of 85.4, checking in at 80.0 degrees, 5.4 degrees cooler.

Following this cool trend, Pierre checked in with an average of 84.1 degrees. That's 5.1 degrees cooler than the average so far this month of 89.2 degrees.

No shock here either, Sisseton was 5.9 degrees colder than the average high of 83.7 degrees. The current months average for high temperature is 77.8 degrees.

And for Watertown, there's no change in following this cool trend: 76.7 degrees for a cool average high temperature thus far in the month. 5.8 degrees cooler than the average high temperature of 82.5 degrees.

Warmer weather will return for Sunday but it's not going to last too long, so enjoy these temps while you can!

Updated Air Show Forecast... And A Warmer Sunday

We're been talking about kind of a see-saw weekend of temperatures. We start out with Saturday and its cooler temperatures. Most of us in the eastern half of our viewing area will be seeing temperatures in the lower 80s and upper 70s. Toward the West - including Pierre - you will see temperatures in the middle to upper 80s.

This is what we're looking at if you're heading to the Air Show on Saturday - updated from yesterday, but without many changes:

After that - the heat is on again. At least for a day or so. We're looking for some 80s to 90s returning to the area on Sunday, after a cooler day on Saturday. Here are some temperatures we're looking for on Sunday:

Looks nice. Unfortunately another cold front comes through to kick off the week. The speed of that cool front will really decide how warm/cool Monday is. Right now Monday looks to be similar toward the East to Sunday - but if that cold front speeds up it could change things. Either way the weekend looks good! Just be ready for a light breeze on Saturday.

Sneak-Peek: Sioux Falls Air Show Forecast

Most of you probably heard the planes flying around - and perhaps noticed the beautiful clear skies because of that. If you didn't see them or if you're not from around the Sioux Falls area, you can always come to the air show this weekend.

We are looking for our cool front to come through and cool things down on Saturday a bit, with a little breeze - but things aren't looking too bad. This is our early forecast for Saturday:

That background picture of the Blue Angels was actually taken today by one of our production assistants at KDLT. It also gave me a chance to have some fun with Photoshop and add the glow around the planes.

After Saturday things look a bit warmer for Sunday - but not really any good storm chances over the next few days.

Have a great night!

The Cool Summer is Nothing New

This summer has proven to be much cooler then average so far. All locations have failed to hit 100 degrees and many places across the far east have only hit 90 once or twice. Many South Dakota cities average 10 or more 90 degree days in the month of July alone. But this cool summer isn't something that just sprung up overnight. In fact, much of the upper Midwest has been on a cool streak for nearly the last two years. The chart below was just released from the National Weather Service and it proves just how cool its been.Over the last 21 months (including this one), Watertown has had 15 months below average, Pierre is at 16, and 19 of the last 21 months, Aberdeen has been below average. So how long is this going to last? Well, there hasn't been any signs of this pattern letting up and the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) agrees, not only in the short term but the long term as well. The next 8-14 days show high probabilities of staying below average and the next three months include much of eastern South Dakota in the below average category as well.

Eclipse... And A Temperature Rollercoaster

We are looking at some warmer weather moving in... but before we get to that - we have to talk about something that happened in areas we don't live in. A rare total eclipse.

This was from SpaceWeather.com: On Wednesday, July 22nd, the Moon eclipsed the midday sun over China. "The temperature dropped from 96.6 F to 88.5F at totality," reports Donald Gardner from Huangshan. "The roosters were crowing and the streetlights came on!"

As for our temperatures rising and/or dropping... we have some middle to upper 80s in the forecast for Thursday and Friday in the East and the Southeast. A cold front comes through after that, though, and we are looking for temperatures to start to fall earlier on in the NE on Friday.

A larger cool-down is showing up for next week. Look at some of these computer-model forecasted highs early next week:

Check out those 70s around the area! If you are going to be missing the September-esque temperatures we've been seeing around here lately over the next couple of days, we get right back into it early next week.

Have a great night!

~KDLT Chief Meteorologist Aaron Shaffer

Cool July....Brief Warmup

The first three weeks of July have been very cool for summertime weather in South Dakota. In fact, Sioux Falls and many other locations across the east have yet to hit 90 degrees during the month. That feat may not seem unusual but keep this in mind; Sioux Falls averages 10 days of 90 degree temperatures or higher in the month of July. If we don't manage to hit that magic number, then it would be the first time that has happened since 1992 and just one of a hand full of times in history.

Some more information about just how cool this July has been was issued by the National Weather Service yesterday. The chart below shows how far from the average temperature several cities are in South Dakota.
To put these numbers into perspective, a month is considered to be below average if the figure is 1.5 degrees below the average and is considered to be well below average if the figure is 3.0 degrees below the average. Notice that almost all of these numbers are below the mark of 3.0 degrees.

But the good news for those of you who like the hot weather is that we are going to see a brief warm up on Thursday as Aaron mentioned yesterday. Here is what one of the models is forecasting for high temperatures come tomorrow.

Stay Cool!!!

Major Warm-Up Coming?

We've been talking for a while about the cool weather - and it *has* been cool - but now we finally have some good news in the heat department. That is, good news if you aren't a fan of cooler 70s in July, rather than upper 80s and lower 90s.

Look at what the computer models are seeing for potential highs on Thursday:

See that line across eastern South Dakota? That divides the lower 80s from the upper 80s. That means we're looking at middle to upper 80s on Thursday, with a few 90s on the western edge of our viewing area. Considering that our average high temperatures are in the middle to upper 80s, it should feel more "normal" for July on those days (Thursday and possibly Friday).

We do have another cooldown on the way - but we'll save that for another post, and just stick to the warm to hot temperatures we're going to be seeing!

Have a good night!

Strong Storms... Viewer Pictures And Radar Update

We've been getting some good viewer pictures today... here are a couple from a storm NE of Murdo and NW of Kennebec earlier this afternoon... you can see a good wall cloud:

Those pictures are from Zach in Pierre, and remember that you can always send us pictures to weather@kdlt.com or to me at a_shaffer@kdlt.com...

As for the current batch of storms, we are looking at them trying to form a solidified line of storms as a cold front moves through the area.

You can see storms kind of forming that line extending basically from NE to the SW... right now closing in on Huron - but mainly with just heavy rain and some wind. We have seen some hail possibilities out there... but only sparse areas of that possibility.

We'll update you as things start to get more interesting, and so check back later if severe weather is looming.

~KDLT Chief Meteorologist Aaron Shaffer

The Cool July Continues

If this July has felt a little cool for a summer month, you're not alone. In fact, the high temperature in Sioux Falls has only managed to get above average just 3 of the first 19 days of the month. Sioux Falls has not had a single day at or above 90 degrees when we typically average 10. Well, according to the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) this cool pattern is going to continue through the end of the month. Here is their outlook for the next 6-10 days and the next 10-14 days.

High probabilities for much of the upper Midwest to see temperatures below normal through the next 14 days. So it doesn't look like we will get a heat wave anytime soon which is good for all of our pocketbooks.

Records Again . . . Plus Storms on the Way

Another chilly start to the weekend, but we'll see temperatures back around average tonight. The warmer air is thanks to the southerly winds we're finally seeing once again. Those winds are also bringing up more humidity though, so we do have the potential of some severe weather for the evening and overnight.
The most unstable air is in western and central South Dakota... we've got storms moving in from the West (I circled them in pink) and they are moving southeast. Quarter size hail and wind gusts over 60mph are accompanied with these storms. Air is more stable in eastern South Dakota, so just expect thundershowers in the East. This system will bring more showers and storms across the rest of the state during the day on Monday. The best chance for rain will be in eastern central SD with most places seeing a quarter of an inch.

Saturday's JazzFest Forecast...And A Warmer Sunday

We're looking at a couple of things this weekend. First of all, we will be seeing another cooler day for Saturday if you're headed off to JazzFest. We broke down the forecast to cover all the major times during the event on Saturday:

Once again, we advise you to pack a light jacket if you're headed out late on Saturday. Then things finally get warmer after that.

How much warmer? Well here's what we're looking at as possible highs for Sunday:

Notice those 80s back in the forecast! Those are looking pretty nice right about now (unless you're a fan of the cooler weather). Either way, things aren't too bad for this weekend - so make sure you get a chance to enjoy it!

JazzFest Forecast... And A Discussion Of Record Cold In July

We'll start with the bad... or not bad - depending on your take on things. As I write this, and we'll change it if we need to - the Watertown area has set a new record low high temperature of 65 degrees. The old record low high for the day was 67 degrees. Sisseton got close as well, with a high so far of 68 degrees, with a record of 66 - so only 2 degrees above that. The cool weather looks to continue tomorrow as well, with a little bit of moderation into the 70 degree range.

As far as JazzFest is concerned... we started the timeline right at 6pm, because that is when the first concert of the night is.

You'll likely want to bring a light jacket along with your lawn chairs, because by the end of the last concert it is going to be chilly! At 10pm you can expect lower 60s already, and as of now I'm forecasting a low of 51 for early Saturday morning, so by the time you head home it may be in the 50s already.

Have a fun time if you head out there! I'll be trying to spend quite a bit of time there as well.

~KDLT Chief Meteorologist Aaron Shaffer

Cool Nights Ahead

Some unseasonably cool air continues to work its way into the state as highs today and tomorrow are only expected to be in the 70's for many locations. But the dewpoints are dropping so low that with calm winds and clear skies tonight, lows will be approaching record levels. Here is a short list of the forecasted and record lows for tonight. So as you head to jazz fest this weekend or are just out late this weekend, you may need some long sleeves to help keep you warm.

Hot Summer Nites Forecast... And More Cool Weather In The Forecast

We'll start out with the breakdown of tonight's forecast for Hot Summer Nites downtown in Sioux Falls...

Notice the little icon at the bottom that says, "Great!" That about sums up tonight's weather. Unless you get cold easily you will likely be a fan of tonight's weather.

As for the next couple of days... if you are one who gets cold easily you will have complaints - but if you were sick of the hot and humid weather you are in luck. Look at some of these temperatures we are seeing forecasted by the computer models - with our temperatures typically a little bit higher than the computers:

Look at those upper 60s in NE South Dakota! While that isn't out of the question - it seems like we will be at least 2 or 3 degrees warmer for most of us than this particular computer model would indicate. Still, though, lower 70s in mid-July? Seems likely.

Enjoy, and have a great night!

~KDLT Chief Meteorologist Aaron Shaffer
