Continuing to see some scattered showers around South Dakota this morning but not much chance of thunderstorms today. The reason for this is there just isn't enough instability in the atmosphere to create lightning and thunder. One way we look at the level of instability is called CAPE. Convective Available Potential Energy or CAPE, is measured on a numerical scale; the higher the number, the more instability in the atmosphere. If there is enough instability, then you can get thunderstorms. The pictures below show cape values at 6am, noon, and 6pm today.Notice that there is less then 100 cape in just about every area with the exception of extreme southwest SD. So, there is very little chance of lightning and thunder with the greatest chances the further south and west you go.
