The winds are really going to pick up today and be out of the Southeast anywhere from 15-30 mph with some gusts up to 40. But because there is very little moisture in the air today, there is a high fire danger for areas of Northeastern South Dakota, Western Minnesota, and northwest Iowa. The pictures below show the winds we are anticipating at the surface as well as the dew points that we are forecasted.
I circled the areas with the highest fire risk today because they have the highest expected wind speeds and lowest expected dew points. On the dew point map, all areas without any shading have dew points under 30 degrees which is extremely low.
This fire danger isn't going to last long though because the chance of showers and storms is in the forecast as early as the predawn hours of your Thursday. So with some thunderstorms around here at the end of the week, its going to start to look, feel, and sound a lot more like spring.
