It's going to be a messy one during the noon - afternoon hours on Sunday. Right now we are stuck in this cold slot with temperatures below freezing... so when systems push through, we get snow. With a warm front moving through, warmer air will be on top of this cold air we have at the surface right now. As this front pushes through, the air aloft will force the precip. to fall as rain, but since we are so cold at the surface and high temperatures are only supposed to be in the 20s... the rain freezes as it hits the ground. The full effect of the warm air will not bring many of us temperatures above 32, so don't expect any rain. Monday will be a few degrees warmer because of this front, but a few degrees won't kick us out of winter.
For all you snow lovers, there looks to be a pretty decent snowstorm on Monday night and into Tuesday that could produce some more measurable snow. After a few more model runs, I'll post what snowfall estimates we could be seeing. Right now, I'm forecasting that the heaviest stuff will be south of I-90. Sioux Falls looks to see 4-6 inches, Mitchell could see around 8 inches, Watertown: 2-3 inches, Aberdeen just around an inch, Pierre could be seeing somewhere between 6-9 inches... More details to come tomorrow. If you love the snow, cross your fingers!
