If you've been watching, you know this is a multi-part storm... This is just round #1 that passed through this evening. You can see where the precip. on the first image trails off from near Sisseton through Minnesota and into Iowa - that's the head of the warm front, so the good news with this is that we're going to see temperatures level off right around now and maybe even increase in some places. This means that most places will just see another round of rain showers tonight and into Monday morning. The only place of concern is in NE SD where temperatures will flirt with freezing and may drop below freezing, causing some areas of freezing rain between 3am and 9am. Again, this isn't going to be a large threat due to the warm front.
Expect another shot of moisture to hit during the afternoon hours on Monday with generally a half an inch to 3/4 an inch of rain expected with isolated higher amounts possible. With this warm front around SE SD we do have a good chance for some thunderstorms Monday afternoon in SE South Dakota, Iowa and NE Nebraska. Temps will again drop to near freezing Monday night and we could see that rain change over briefly to freezing rain around 8pm before exiting southern SD. This will change over to snow around midnight for northern SD, so 2"-4" of snow can be expected along the SD-ND border as the moisture will wrap around this low pressure system.
Meteorologist Cody Matz will update you on this system, but this is what the timeline looks like for now. Safe travels if you must hit the roads!
